Life with the Triathlon Squad

I just wrote a blog for AthletesLounge.com in which I get a little more in depth with what I'm doing in California and what the life of a young aspiring pro is like. Check it out!

Rolling on Rolf for 2013!

Absolutely stoked is the only way I can describe how I feel about this new partnership. I'll be racing on the super aerodynamic TdF6 wheelset and training on the standout Vigor's for the 2013-2014 seasons. Rolf has an amazing product, and an understanding of the athletes who use them. As I develop and grow as an athlete, I know that they will be matching and challenging my intensity and passion every step of the way.

"All Rolf Prima wheel systems are hand-built in Eugene, Oregon using its numerous patents including its ground breaking paired spoke technology. Rolf Prima wheel systems were developed for top-level performance and are engineered to combine lightweight and aerodynamic performance."

As with everything I use, you try, drool over, learn about, and buy Rolf from the crew at Athletes Lounge

Waiting for the laundry

I'm halfway through. It's in the dryer now. I'm watching "Senna", a documentary on Formula One legend Ayarta Senna, a young phenom from Brazil. I'm amazed by his passion, his all-out style, and commitment to his values. I hope he keeps it together through the whole film, so I don't have to rescind my recommendation that you watch it :)

Today was a fairly laid back day by squad standards, we only had a two hour ride with 5min low-cadence, best-watts efforts, followed by a 50 minute run. I decided to Carpe Diem by doing laundry, eating, and blogging about it. Normally, writing a blog seems like an insurmountable task (really, starting is the hard part) and the next workout is just around the corner. Not an ideal situation for someone like myself who likes to finish what they started in one sitting.

I know I am not the only one out there like this. In my psychological evaluation of my roommates, I have discovered that at least Joe shares this same quality. We are from different sides of the country, so it is not a regional phenomenon. Maybe it is simply a trait of over-achievers. I can remember staying up late into the night against my parents orders to try and finish building my first remote control car. For reasons beyond my control, I literally could not put the screw drivers down, working by lamplight, probably taking ten years off of the lifespan of my eyes in one night. For now I will credit my father, I've noticed that he also is either cycling (recreation) or 100% engaged in repairing every last part of his house on any given Saturday. Once he starts, he can't stop until he's exhausted or the light gives out. I love it.

The laundry is done, dinner needs cooking, and Senna is about to take the win.

Think Sesh

Had a good one with the gang tonight. It even delayed our trip to the yogurt store.

Anna suggested that there was no such thing as free will and that we are all just reacting to stimuli around us about on some other stimuli from some other point in time. You aren't really making a decision, you are just practicing self preservation at the subconscious, maybe even molecular level.

Joe disagreed.

My argument was that Anna's entire argument was based on her argument being correct in the first place.

It doesn't matter who won, what's important is that we all had a good think about it.

Moving Out

It's been way too long since I posted last. Don't worry, I have a great excuse: I'm moving to San Diego.

Packing is my Kryptonite. I start to get light headed and count the minutes until I can work out again and end the pain.

This may come as old news to some, but for me it's still sinking in. Since moving to Portland (Gresham) at age 3, I have yet to live anywhere else. I even went to college here.

I have joined The Triathlon Squad, a group of young professional triathletes, like myself, who are chasing their dreams of being Olympians and playing sports for a living. I am incredibly excited about the training environment and the attitude of everyone in the group. I expect great things for the coming years :)

As my time in PDX rapidly dwindles, I find myself getting very nostalgic. I'm doing lots of "last things". Last run in Forest Park, last ride in the Gorge, last time hanging out with buddies I've known since swim team pre-Y2k.

I have to pause and realize this isn't the END end. I've bought an air mattress (self-inflating $27.99) and will be surfing it around the country/world from now on. Depending on training cycle and racing schedule, it may bring me back to the great Northwest much sooner than I currently anticipate. My first race is March 9, and from then on, my roomates and I may be racing enough that the base in San Diego doesn't make sense. The cool (and scary at times) part is that it's not a big deal. Things have a way of working themselves out. I know what I need to accomplish and nothing is going to get in my way. The air mattress might make a trip to Rio yet.
